Volunteer Testimony: The Day Pastor Paul Gave Away His Shoes

At Christ’s Body Ministries, we often say that serving isn’t just about giving—it’s about receiving too. Recently, one of our volunteers shared a story that reminded me of that truth. He wanted to remain anonymous, but his words speak volumes about the heart behind what we do.

He told me, “It’s good for my soul. It’s good to see people come through and smile when they get food. I’ve been doing this for a year and a half with Pastor Paul, and he’s such a great man—always enthusiastic, always helping people.”

Then he shared a moment he’ll never forget. A guest came in with shoes that were completely worn out. Without hesitation, Pastor Paul took the shoes off his own feet and gave them away. Our volunteer said, “It was awesome. That’s why I do this.”

What moved me most is that this volunteer is also experiencing homelessness himself. Yet he chooses to serve—because he understands the struggles of those who walk through our doors. He went on to say, “A lot of people that come in here are pretty cool. You just gotta get to know them. And what Pastor Paul does, and those women who wake up early to make burritos for the homeless—it’s awesome.”

This is the gospel in action: giving what we have, loving people as they are, and discovering that serving others is just as healing for us as it is for them. At Christ’s Body, we don’t just hand out food or clothing—we share hope, dignity, and community.
