“This Is Where Jesus Shows Up”: Pastor Harold’s Thanksgiving Reflections

Pastor Harold Velasquez stood in front of the 48th Street Shelter as the line of guests stretched farther and farther across the lot — a line that would grow four or five times longer before the day was done. Hundreds of men and women, carrying the weight of cold nights, empty stomachs, and heavy stories, were waiting for something more than food.

They were waiting for hope.

“We’re expecting to feed several hundred people an amazing turkey dinner,” Harold said, glancing at the trays of turkey, stuffing, green beans, rolls, and even slices of pie. “But more than anything, we’re here to point people toward Jesus — His grace, His mercy, His love, His forgiveness… and His power to break chains.”

Just steps away sat the prayer tent — a place where tears fall freely, burdens are lifted, and people encounter the love of Christ in real time. That’s where Harold spent the day, side by side with another pastor, praying for the broken, the exhausted, the addicted, the overlooked.

“This is what it means to be the hands and feet of Jesus,” Harold said. “This is ministry that impacts people right then and right there. These folks are hurting, they’re needy, they’re looking for hope — and if you have the hope of Christ in you, you need to join us.”

Why This Matters Right Now

The holidays may be winding down, but the need is not.

The people Harold prayed for today will still be hungry tomorrow. They will still be cold next week. They will still be searching for hope in January — long after the turkey is gone.

As the year ends, Christ’s Body Ministries is asking for your help.
Not just to serve meals — but to continue sharing the Gospel with thousands of men and women on Denver’s streets.

Every dollar you give fuels:

  • Daily Bread breakfasts that restore dignity

  • Mobile outreach that brings meals and prayer to hard-to-reach shelters

  • Sober living and residential programs that transform lives

  • Moments like the ones Harold witnessed — where Jesus steps in and chains break

We can’t continue this ministry without people who believe, as we do, that every soul deserves a chance to encounter Christ’s love.
