The Shoes Fit! THEY FIT!!!
We started the morning in prayer. Before anything was handed out, before the lines formed, before the conversations began, we stood together and asked God to move in a place most people pass by without noticing. Then we went out and served. Over 200 people that day. Food, clothing, conversations, and moments that most people will never see. It was steady and nonstop, the kind of day where you are just trying to keep up with what is right in front of you.
And then I met Katherine. She was not asking for much, just shoes. The ones she had were worn out, the kind of wear that tells a story without needing words. When you are on your feet all day, walking, moving, trying to get from one place to another, shoes are not a small thing. They are everything. We started looking through what we had, not knowing if we would find the right pair. Not every outreach ends that way. Sometimes you do your best and it is close enough.
But this time was different. We found a pair that fit. Not just close, the right size. Then we realized something else. Katherine used to be a runner. You could hear it in the way she talked about it, like it was still a part of her. And the shoes we found were not just functional, they were a style that made sense for her. Something she could connect to. And then it got even better. They were her favorite colors. It sounds small, but in that moment it was not small at all. You could see the shift right away. It went from just getting by to actually being seen.
We served over 200 people that day, and every moment matters, but this is the one I keep coming back to. Because it is easy to think this work is about big numbers and big impact, but sometimes it is this. A pair of shoes, the right size, a style that connects to who someone used to be, colors that remind them they still have identity and a story that is not over. That is what dignity looks like. That is what it means to really see someone.
This is what happens out here more than people realize. We show up, we serve, and in the middle of it, God meets people in ways that are personal and specific. Katherine just needed shoes, but what she received was something more. And if you have ever wondered if being part of this matters, it does. Moments like that happen because people choose to show up, and because people choose to give.
