15 Jan Robert’s Story: From prison and homelessness to dignity and new life

A Story of Addiction, Prison, and an Unexpected Invitation
When Robert talks about his life today, he does so with gratitude and honesty. But that wasn’t always his story.
Robert grew up in foster care and orphanages, moving from home to home, never really knowing where he belonged. As a teenager, he fell in with the wrong crowd and began using alcohol to numb the pain of deep, unresolved trauma. By the time he was 16 and still finishing high school, Robert was already experiencing homelessness. What followed were years on the streets, addiction, broken relationships, and eventually prison.
Robert spent much of his early adulthood incarcerated. He describes himself back then as someone he barely recognizes now. Alcohol controlled his life. Shame followed him everywhere. Even after his release, the pull of addiction was strong, and the odds of returning to prison felt inevitable.
Then something changed.
A friend who had walked a similar road kept inviting Robert to Christ’s Body Ministries. Not once. Not twice. But again and again. For a long time, Robert wasn’t ready. But when he finally walked through the doors, he expected rejection. He expected to be told he wasn’t ready, wasn’t clean enough, or needed to fix himself first.
Instead, he was welcomed.
When Robert shared his past openly, the response he received wasn’t hesitation or judgment. It was an invitation: “What days do you want to come volunteer?” That moment softened his heart. For the first time in a long time, he felt seen and accepted as he was.
Today, Robert is a consistent presence at Christ’s Body Ministries. He shows up early, rides multiple buses, and helps run the morning coffee. He serves alongside men he once knew in prison and on the streets. He calls them brothers. He no longer wears a mask. He no longer feels alone.
Robert says plainly, “If I hadn’t been invited to Christ’s Body, I would be back in prison. I wouldn’t have been able to fight my addiction or face my trauma. God gave me a second chance through this ministry.”
That second chance is what your support makes possible.
Because of generous partners like you, Christ’s Body Ministries remains a place where people don’t have to pretend, qualify, or clean themselves up before being welcomed. It is a place where dignity comes first, relationships are real, and transformation happens over time.
Your gift makes a difference. It provides more opportunities for connection and second chances, allowing for more mornings with Robert, filled with warm coffee and meaningful conversations.
Thank you for standing with us and with men like Robert. Lives are being changed because you chose to care.
With gratitude,
