Multiply Your Impact — Without Increasing Your Cost
One of the most tax-efficient ways to support Christ’s Body Ministries is through a gift of appreciated assets. Whether it’s stocks, mutual funds, real estate, or other investments, donating these assets can reduce your tax burden while fueling our mission to serve the homeless, feed the hungry, and reflect the love of Christ.
Why Give Appreciated Assets?
Donating long-term appreciated assets (held more than one year) offers powerful benefits:
Eliminate Capital Gains Taxes
You avoid paying capital gains taxes on the appreciation, which can be significant.
Increase Your Giving Power
Because of the tax savings, your gift can go further than a cash donation might allow.
Receive a Charitable Tax Deduction
You may deduct the fair market value of the asset at the time of donation (subject to IRS limitations).
Create a Lasting Legacy
Support the long-term work of Christ’s Body Ministries while managing your estate efficiently.
Types of Appreciated Assets You Can Give
Publicly Traded Stocks & Mutual Funds: Easy to transfer and highly beneficial from a tax standpoint.
Privately Held Business Interests: With proper planning, these can support ministry while achieving tax efficiency.
Real Estate: Vacant land, rental properties, or even personal residences may be gifted.
Cryptocurrency: Digital assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum are increasingly accepted and can offer similar tax benefits.
Collectibles or Other Non-Cash Assets: Depending on their value and marketability, other assets may also qualify.
How to Make a Gift of Appreciated Assets
1. Contact Your Financial Advisor: Before initiating a gift, speak with your advisor to explore the best approach for your situation.
2. Contact Christ’s Body Ministries: We’ll coordinate with you or your advisor to ensure a smooth transfer.
3. Transfer the Assets Directly: By donating directly — rather than selling first — you avoid capital gains taxes and maximize your gift.
4. Receive Your Tax Acknowledgment: We’ll provide you with the documentation needed for your charitable deduction.
5. You can qualify for an additional Colorado State tax credit of 25% through our HCTC (Homeless Charitable Tax Credit)
Example: Giving Stock Instead of Cash
If you purchased stock years ago for $1,000 and it is now worth $10,000, you would owe capital gains tax on $9,000 if you sold it. However, if you donate the stock directly to Christ’s Body Ministries, you:
Avoid the capital gains tax
Receive a $10,000 charitable deduction
Receive the 25% HCTC Colorado State tax credit with assets appraised over $5000
Help sustain vital ministry services
